Ta globo hego noesta gee. That’s minion language for The world has gone crazy.
Crazy for these pill shaped strange and adorable creatures. Santa’s elves, the Oompa Loompas, the little fury bears in Star Wars – helpers can steal the show and it seems Minions have succeeded better than others. Can they walk the crazy gibberish talk on their own?
What’s the Movie About
A warm voiceover belonging to Geoffrey Rush introduces us in the story of the Minions and how they came about – apparently, a lot of people were curious about the origins of Minions and the fact that I never wondered about that made me feel like an outsider. As the classic animation shows us at the beginning of the movie, Minions emerged on this Earth with the desire deeply ingrained in their DNA to follow and serve the most despicable villain. The problem is their genetic configuration, as mixed up as their language – they always end up killing their master. After enough minion mistakes have been made and it seems the world has been emptied of villains and they can no longer find a master, they retire in an icy home and soon enough they become depressed. Kevin volunteers to go out into the world and bring a new master. He is joined by Stuart and Bob, a child Minion whose teddy bear’s cuteness rivals his own. They end up in New York, raving time of the 60’s. The nostalgia-driven background: from music, clothes to gags checks the all-winning current film formula of appealing to more than one generation. The 3 minions end up at the Villain Con, where through a clumsy, but fortunate event, they become the servants of the most feared villain, Scarlet Overkill. She has some unresolved issues from when she was a little girl, so she bestows on the Minions the mission to steal the Queen’s crown. Unexpected things happen, some funnier than others, in a blend of absurd and adorable, wrapped in a bright yellow crazy fest.
What Can Be Learnt
CALLING. The Minions have a CALLING that they’ve been following since their emergence on this planet. The usual storyline is that the hero has to find his CALLING or it is revealed to him through special events and by extraordinary characters. But not for the Minions. They know what they have to do. The question now becomes how? Despite the negative side of it – serve the biggest villain-, their purpose is very simple, it’s ingrained in themselves. I saw the film at the same time as I was reading the Gallup Strengths Finder and after taking the test. The concept of this initiative is that we don’t have to look any further than ourselves to realize what our true purpose is: we just need to dig deep enough and find our strengths and put them to good use. We are under the spell of complicated stories, with characters who take such complicated journeys outside themselves to find something much closer to home and to their hearts. The self-acceptance – and a pinch of ignorance – that the Minions display reminded me that there is a simpler way.
What’s the Key Take-Away
Minions is not a movie you will miss out on – even if you dislike the little yellow weirdoes, people around you will be talking so much about it, you’ll know what it is about. On a scale from expectations totally crushed to it was so much funnier than I imagined, Minions was somewhere in between. But the characters stubbornness of following their goals is so endearing, you won’t come out of the movie cinema empty-hearted.
